A semen analysis assesses the health and viability of a man’s sperm.
The test looks at three major factors that can impact fertility:
- Sperm count, the number of healthy sperm
- Morphology, the shape of the sperm
- Motility, the movement of the sperm
The semen analysis may also be tested to see if it contains antibodies if this is thought necessary.
Sperm counts can fluctuate from one specimen to the next so in most cases a man will give several samples for analysis prior to treatment.
The optimal time for a sample to be provided is usually between two and four days abstinence.
